• It is said that there are more hotel rooms in Las Vegas than any other part of the world and if you wanted to stay in all of them for a night it would take around 288 years! Now that's a long holiday!
• Las Vegas is surely the shrimp capital of the USA as figures show that more of this popular seafood is consumed in this city alone than the rest of the United States combined!
• The names 'Las Vegas' and 'Nevada' are Spanish and translate as 'The Meadows' and 'Snow-Capped', respectively.
• The current style of slot machines we see in Las Vegas Casinos today are based on the Liberty Bell slot machine that was invented by Charles Fey in 1899.
• It seems crazy to believe now, but in 1910 a law was passed to make gambling in Las Vegas illegal!
• Opening in 1906, the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino was the first of its kind in Las Vegas.
• The first resort to open on the Las Vegas strip was the El Rancho Vegas in 1941. It was the largest hotel in the city with 110 rooms and was destroyed by a fire in 1960. The Hilton Grand Vacation Club now occupies the site where this legendary hotel once sat.
• The Hoover Dam, completed in 1936, was and still is the largest public works project in the United States. Also, the hard hat used on every building site around the world was invented for the people working at the time on the Hoover Dam.
• The state of Nevada has more mountain ranges than any of the other US states and 85% of the land is owned by the government, including the mysterious Area 51.
